Are you adamant that Nairobi, Kenya is too expensive to travel? This is not true. These are six ways to save money on flights to Nairobi.
1. Book Chartered Flights
Sometimes, packages that include a flight are cheaper than separate flights. Take a look at charter company package deals. Of course, you are not required to stay at their accommodations.
Charters may fly to Mombasa (at Mombasa’s coast) rather than Nairobi. Mombasa is closer to beach resorts and close to major wildlife reserves like Tsavo East or West. There are many Kenyan airlines that fly between Mombasa, Nairobi, and there is also a bus or a night train. It takes approximately 9 hours.
2. Book Separate Flights
Direct flights are not available from Canada or the USA to Nairobi. You will have to fly from North America over Europe, usually Amsterdam, Brussels, London or the Middle East. You can often save money by purchasing a ticket to Europe first and then a separate ticket for Kenya.
3. Flying Blue:
Kenya Airways is the largest Kenyan airline and is part of the Flying Blue program along with Northwest Airlines. Continental Airlines, Air France. KLM. Delta Airlines. Aeromexico. Flying Blue points are earned by traveling with them. With enough points, you can get better hotel and ticket deals, upgrades, and more. KLM (the largest Dutch airline company) has a joint venture in Amsterdam with Kenya Airways. This is the hub for flights to Nairobi.
4. Time Your Trip
The tourist season in Kenya is December-January and July/August. These seasons are when prices rise, not just for air tickets but also for accommodations. You will get better deals if you travel outside of these times.
You will generally get better rates if you fly at unfavorable times (e.g., very early or late in the morning). Air companies will assume that you are a tourist and not a business traveller if you include a weekend. If you include a weekend, it is best to not fly on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, as these days are when most tourists travel.
5. Book a Round-the-World Ticket
A round-the-world ticket (RTW) is a good option if you want to travel to Nairobi as part a longer trip. There are many alliances of airlines that offer RTW tickets. Each one has different conditions. One of the most well-known alliances is Star Alliance, which includes nineteen airlines. Some are based upon mileage, while others are based on time periods.
6. Take a look around
As always, don’t book too early. It is very competitive in Kenya’s tourism industry. Ask around, compare prices, and don’t book too soon.
